The Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) has taken note of the continued campaign of violence perpetrated by the state-sponsored militia that calls itself “Fano of Wollega” against the civilian population in the East Wollega Zone of Oromia. This ragtag group, which is originally organized, equipped, and logistically sustained by the Abiy regime, and until recently held formal positions in its militia forces, represents one instrument of destabilisation in the area.
The regime’s strategic objectives in allowing the existence of this militia are mainly twofold:
1. To instill a climate of fear and intimidation within the Oromo communities of the region, thereby seeking to suppress widespread popular support for and participation in the legitimate resistance movement led by the OLA;
2. To foment and perpetuate inter-communal strife, specifically designed to attempt to fracture the solidarity and sow discord between the country’s two largest communities.
The actions of this militia continue to constitute a severe breach of the fundamental rights of our people. The OLA holds the Abiy regime directly responsible for these atrocities, as it created this criminal group and is the primary entity enabling their continued existence.
Therefore, the OLA declares its unequivocal right and responsibility to take all necessary measures to protect the civilian population from these state-sanctioned attacks. We will act to neutralize any group, which, whether wittingly or unwittingly, serves the destructive and divisive interests of a regime. We further call upon all responsible political actors and civic organizations, to recognize this militia as an instrument of statesponsored terror.
