Confronted with deepening political isolation, military attrition, and economic collapse, Abiy Ahmed’s Phantom Party (PP) cabal has once again turned to disinformation, proxy attacks, and religious/identity-based assaults.
In recent days, the regime circulated false claims alleging that the OLA has entered secret negotiations with the PP. This fabrication follows months of low-level cadre propaganda in Oromia about “silencing guns among brothers,” one of the narratives the OLA previously warned against in April. Such disinformation is neither new nor accidental. It is another futile attempt by Abiy to appropriate the legitimacy and public support of opposition movements. If experience is any guide, no durable settlement can emerge under a man who weaponizes deceit and violence as instruments of rule.
Another recycled instrument by the Ably is ethnic/religious divisions. Having failed to ignite large-scale violence in Jimma and Arsi last year, the regime has recently attacked Orthodox Christian communities across the Arsi zones, executed through its proxy armed networks in Oromia. Similar proxies have recently been cultivated in Amhara and Tigray, indicating Abiy’s plan to act as both the arsonist and the firefighter across the country.
Time and again, our people have refused to be spellbound by Abiy’s ethnic posturing as an “Oromo party.” That vigilance must continue. Stand firm, and continue to act in concert with the leaders of our movement Across Oromia and beyond, a formidable Oromo political force has emerged, uniting the OLA, principled opposition leaders, and conscientious actors within the PP regime.
The international community must act fast. The country stands on the brink of yet another Abiy-made catastrophe. With an economy in free fall, an army in disarray, and diplomacy at its lowest ebb, Abiy Ahmed is poised to unleash a new war whose consequences will not stop at Ethiopia’s borders. The writing has long been on the wall, and the costs of silence will be measured not only in our people’s lives but in regional instability.
