Worker Exploitation in Ethio-Djibouti Railway
Political instability in Ethiopia is adversely affecting major infrastructure projects, including the Ethio-Djibouti Railway. Despite government claims of economic prosperity, the reality shows a struggling corporation facing financial challenges.
Issues Faced
- Financial Struggles:
- Contrary to reported profits, the railway corporation struggles to pay salaries and overheads.
- Unethical Practices: Senior management at the corporation’s headquarters in Finfinne are imposing unexplained salary deductions on junior staff.
- Labor Law Violations: Junior employees face threats of dismissal, arrest, and accusations of opposition support if they voice their grievances.
Employees have reported these issues anonymously, fearing retaliation. The dire economic situation has forced the management to resort to such practices, further exacerbating the workforce’s plight.
