Allegations of Forceful Recruitment and Human Rights Abuses in Shanan Dunggo District

Shanan Dunggo District, Oromia Region — Recent developments in the Qufansiq area of Shanan Dungo District have shed light on concerning practices related to martial law enforcement across Oromia. As an established pattern throughout the region, the Ethiopian government has continued an illegal forceful recruitment into its armed forces. Disturbingly, reliable information from the ground indicates that some of the recruits are underage boys.
In direct violation of Article 38 (3) of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which explicitly prohibits the recruitment of children below the age of 15, the repressive regime persists in implementing these unlawful measures. Reports of coerced conscription of young individuals into the country’s armed forces have become widespread across Oromia.
However, forceful recruitment is not the only human rights concern in Shanan Dunggo District. Reports also highlight instances of civilians disappearing without sufficient grounds. The local militia commander, Zakiyu Abdalla, has emerged as a notorious figure, allegedly coordinating these illegal activities.
The situation in Shanan Dunggo District underscores broader issues related to human rights abuses under the current administration.
