Re: Condolences for Migrants Lost Off the Coast of Yemen (OLF-OLA Press Release)

Aug 6, 2025

The Oromo Liberation Front- Oromo Liberation Army (OLF-OLA) extends its deepest condolences to the families of migrants who perished in the tragic, but entirely avoidable, incident off the coast of Yemen, yet another human toll directly driven by Abiy Ahmed’s endless war, economic mismanagement, and systemic repression.

Desperate migrations from Oromia and Ethiopia in general are driven by Abiy Ahmed’s cycle of violence and instability, and the resultant crippling of the economy. The regime’s sole modus operandi—militarized rule—has diverted vital resources from development to war, while its cronyism, corruption, and vanity projects have exacerbated poverty, unemployment, and food insecurity—pushing vulnerable populations to undertake perilous journeys in search of survival.

The only sustainable solution to the country’s multi-pronged crises is the removal of Abiy Ahmed and his few cronies through collective struggle. The OLA renews its call upon all people of the country, political movements, and international allies to unite in a concerted effort to dismantle this regime and replace it with a just, inclusive, and democratic system.

We stand in solidarity with the victims’ families and reaffirm our commitment to freedom from want and fear.
