State-Sponsored Terror and Systematic Extortion Grip Oromia

ONM-ABO, 7-15 June 2026

A wave of arbitrary detentions, violent extortion, and state-sponsored demographic manipulation has intensified across Oromia, according to field reports compiled by the Oromia National Media (ONM). Operational updates reveal a coordinated campaign by Prosperity Party (PP) cadres and federal forces targeting civilian populations to suppress the Oromo national movement.

In East Wollega’s Billo Boshe district, regime operatives have resorted to coercive tactics to bolster their dwindling support. Local sources confirm that PP agents forcibly rounded up youth in the Yaad-hundee and 01 kebeles for political indoctrination. The operatives offered large financial loans in exchange for local security enlistment, threatening that those who opposed the regime would be driven from the area. The local youth flatly rejected the financial inducements, stating they chose to remain independent of the regime’s political apparatus.

Concurrently, economic warfare against Oromo civilians has escalated. In Xuulloo district, West Hararghe, PP agents are using firearm coercion to extract a compulsory 1,000 Birr militia food tax from individual residents, severely exacerbating the impact of runaway inflation.

A far more severe financial assault occurred in Marti district, East Arsi. At Afarsoo in the Faraqsaa kebele, PP soldiers dragged a civilian, Sulxii Arabaa, from his home. After beating him under the false pretext of concealing weapons, regime forces labelled him an enemy sympathizer and extorted 800,000 Birr from him before vandalizing and looting his shop.

Further extortion has disrupted vital infrastructure links. Commercial freight drivers operating logistics routes between Addis Ababa and Naqamte report that PP checkpoint units systematically demand 40,000 Birr per truck without issuing legal receipts, a practice driving up basic commodity costs across the entire region. In Duukam town, PP operatives similarly extorted 100,000 Birr from a business owner named Mr Maammush. When he refused to pay twice, he was falsely accused of working for an opposition entity and imprisoned, while his vehicle and cargo were impounded.

In Horo Guduru Wollega’s Sulula Fincaa’aa district, arbitrary detentions have intensified. Ms Dammee Amansiisaa was arrested in Fincaa’aa town after being accused of refusing to choose the Prosperity Party. Investigations indicate she was denounced out of personal malice by a regime loyalist identified as Beeteliheem Alamaayyoo. In Northern Oromia’s Wallo Zone, state operatives abducted Ms Amoo Huseen, a mother of five children, from Baatee town. Ms Huseen, an ordinary shopkeeper with no political affiliations, was taken along with her four-month-old infant; her whereabouts remain unknown.
