Teenager shot dead by government forces in Dugda district, East Shaggar

Jun 13, 2025

A 19-year-old Oromo youth, Malka Malkee, was shot and killed by government forces in the early hours of 9 June in Shuubi Gamo village, Dugda district, East Shaggar region, according to a statement issued by Oromia National Media–Arrata Biyyoolessa Oromiyaa (ONM-ABO) on 10 June.

The shooting took place around 5:00 a.m., with local residents reporting that Malka was targeted without warning by armed units affiliated with the ruling Prosperity Party (PP). No official explanation has been given for the killing.

The ONM-ABO statement condemned the killing as part of a broader campaign of state violence in Oromia, accusing the Prosperity Party-led regime of committing atrocities under the pretext of enforcing the rule of law. It described the killing as unlawful and deliberate, carried out in violation of both national legal frameworks and basic human rights.

Observers and local activists allege that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration is using counter-insurgency operations as a cover for widespread abuses in Oromo communities. They argue that the ongoing deployment of federal forces across rural Oromia has led to indiscriminate violence, with young people often bearing the brunt of the repression.

The incident adds to a growing list of civilian deaths in the region, as conflict intensifies between the Ethiopian government and the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), which continues to challenge state authority in pursuit of Oromo self-determination.

Human rights groups and local leaders have called for an independent investigation into the shooting, and for an end to what they describe as a campaign of terror against Oromo civilians.

No comment has yet been issued by federal or regional authorities regarding the killing of Malka Malkee.
